What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors are regulated primary healthcare practitioners that are trained in diagnoses, treatment, management and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, as well as their effects on the nervous system and your general health.

Chiropractic treatment often focuses on your spine but may focus on other parts of your body depending on the particular issue you are dealing with. It is suitable for people of all ages and treatment involves gentle specific manipulation to free joints in the spine and other areas of the body that are not moving properly. In addition to manipulation, chiropractors use a variety of techniques including massage, mobilisation and provide advice about exercises, stretches, posture and lifestyle.

The UK report by Professor Gert published in 2010 on the ‘Effectiveness of Manual Therapies’ concluded that spinal manipulation/mobilisation is effective in the adults for acute, subacute and chronic low back pain; for the prevention of migraine and cervicogenic headache and also in the treatment of a number of upper and lower extremity joint conditions. Thoracic spinal manipulation/mobilisation is effective for acute/subacute neck pain and, when combined with exercise, cervical spinal/manipulation is effective for chronic neck pain. Treatment and general advice for sciatica can also be offered.
